Here To Be Heard DJ judges, Modestep know that the ability to truly command a crowd is a rarely sourced skill set. As entries to the 2015 HTBH competition fly in, all potential winners are honing their mix and gearing up to play the Relentless stage at this year’s Leeds Festival. Taking the top spot last year, Luke Hussan was chosen to entertain the thousands and DJ live on the same stage as legends, Netsky.
We had a quick chat with Luke about his HTBH experience… What was it like to play in front of 10,000 people and be on the same stage as Netsky?
It was a truly phenomenal experience and one of the best two hours of my life! I can only describe it as an outer body experience, I am never one to get that nervous about things but I must admit I had a few jitters after seeing the crowds at the Relentless stage the nights prior to my set. The set itself went off! I played a whole range of different housey numbers and the crowd vibed off each track. It felt like I was really connected to the crowd. Kove followed and then I think Netsky. To be on a lineup like that was a dream come true!
What advice would you give to the entrants this year?
I entered this on a whim really, I thought that I wouldn’t have a chance but I had seen friends enter DJ competitions and win, so I thought why not give it a try. I would say it’s really important to put in as much effort as possible in regards to both the mix and the video. I spent an entire day trying to get my responses right in the video part of the entry and even though it is not a super pro video, you can tell time and effort was put into making sure my responses were as genuine as possible. In regards to the mix, it doesn’t matter what type of music you play or how many styles or even how many tracks you put in. Just make sure the mixing is perfect, the tracks gel well and you take the extra time to apply some mastering to give it that radio commercial edge in terms of sound quality. (If you don’t know how to do it yourself as a friend who does to spare 15 minutes or better yet ask a music mastering studio)
What are you up to this summer?
This summer sees me play my first set in IBIZA!!! I am heading out there as a resident of Birmingham based brands 2:31 and Mr Jangles as they take over the Ibiza Rocks Hotel from June 8th-13th. Aswell as a few other big events that I am required to stay hush-hush about for now 😉
